Named for the Cold War era of competition between the USA and USSR over spaceflight capability, the “Space Race” glass collection by Artel is comprised of two separate motifs: “Sputnik” features an image of the famous Soviet satellite in flight, careening past glittering gold stars and planets, while “Apollo 11” depicts a space-suited American astronaut standing near a lunar landing module with a magnificent earthrise looming in the background.

Each motif features not only richly detailed hand engraving, but also generous quantities of gold and platinum gilding, marking the first time in Artel’s history that both of these luxurious materials are used in a single motif.
